Benjamin H. Butler, P.E.
Chief Operating Officer
Ben Butler has more than 25 years of engineering and leadership experience with a broad background in engineering, construction, environmental stewardship, resource management, human resources, organizational administration and logistics.
He has extensive experience working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), including an installation Director of Public Works (DPW), a USACE District Engineer, and a USACE Deputy Division Commander.
Highlights of his career included:
- Directing a $1.1 billion emergency response and recovery operation for the historic 2004 hurricane season
- Leading the Mojave Desert Ecosystem Initiative, a multi-agency team; earning Vice President Al Gore’s Hammer Award for unique solutions to merging environmental and operational objectives
- Earning "Project of the Year" for three consecutive years in national competition
Butler was most recently Deputy Division Commander (COO) for the U.S. Army Engineer Division in Atlanta, with five district offices supporting military and civil engineering and construction in five Southeastern states, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Central and South America.
Previously, he was Commander and District Engineer for an 800-person military and civil engineering and construction organization in charge of 10 satellite offices in a two-state area. He was responsible for all aspects of engineering from initial concept through design and construction, to operation and maintenance. He held responsibility for maintaining and operating more than $6.5 billion of public infrastructure, including seven hydroelectric dams, 12 navigation locks and dams, and more than 150 public parks on 12 lakes and the Arkansas River, serving over 25 million visitors a year.
He earned a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in civil engineering from the United States Military Academy.
Butler is president of the Atlanta Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), a member of the Association of the U.S. Army, and a member of the Army Engineer Association.
