FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
City of Atlanta Aircraft Rescue Fire Facility #33 Receives LEED® Certification
ATLANTA, GA., (April 14, 2008) — The City of Atlanta Aircraft Rescue Fire Facility (ARFF) #33 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (H-JAIA) has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Certification from the U. S. Green Building Council.
The 21,000-square-foot facility, located on 4.25 acres near the airport’s fifth runway, houses 8,000 square feet of space for rescue and fire fighting equipment. The remaining area accommodates 14 firefighters and administrative personnel. A mezzanine area above the living quarters allows firefighters to practice training drills and simulate real-life situations.
The ARFF # 33 is a new addition to a series of existing fire facilities at Hartsfield Jackson. It is the city’s first fire station to apply sustainable development principles using the LEED Rating System
“We are proud to have our first LEED-certified facility at Hartsfield-Jackson,” said Project Manager Terry Bass. “We have quite a few more projects on the horizon as part of our Capital Improvement Program. Our ultimate goal is for every building we build from now on to be LEED compliant.”
Commissioning and Green Building Solutions (CxGBS), an Atlanta-based green building consulting firm, provided LEED certification and energy modeling services for the facility.
Among the sustainable design features:
- Reduced potable water consumption by 46 percent
- Energy efficiency 46 percent greater than industry standard
- High efficiency air conditioning and heat pump units
- Demand-based ventilation using CO2 levels to determine rate of ventilation for each zone
- Lighting controls including dimming and motion detectors
- Utilization of mulch from construction waste wood around building and along new runway
- High efficiency glazing
“The improved energy performance of the fire station saves 2.4 million gallons of water per year keeping with the City of Atlanta’s commitment to the environment and community with an emphasis on water conservation, leveraging the city’s resources to allow continued growth,” said Jay Enck, Principal and Founder of CxGBS.
Glenn Jardine, PE , a Vice President with Heery International Inc. and Principal for the joint venture of HSST (Hartsfield Support Services Team), the project’s designer noted, “This is an important project for H-JAIA as well as the City of Atlanta. The airport is committed to sustainable design principles for their major expansion program and this is only the second project that has received LEED certification for a City of Atlanta facility. The entire design team was very committed to demonstrating that a LEED certified building could be achieved at H-JAIA. We are proud that the team was able to meet our LEED goal while also meeting the client’s budget and schedule. By all measurements, we would call this a successful project for the entire team.”
