Project Overview:
The Balzer Theater at Herren’s is a $5 million renovation of the old Herren’s Restaurant, located since 1934 in downtown Atlanta’s Fairlie-Poplar district. The building is now the home of Theatrical Outfit, an Atlanta theatrical group that wanted a green building with clean, quiet air and acoustics, as well as a comfortable environment for its audience.
The new theater, awarded a LEED Silver Certification, is a model of environmentally sound construction with healthy indoor air and minimal impact on the environment.
Sustainable Design Features:
- Rainwater collected on the roof used for toilet and sewage systems – reduced potable water usage and sewer/storm water outflow
- Reduced heat island effect
- Low volatile organic compounds in materials and finishes
- Optimized energy performance
- Recycled contents used in construction
- Greater than 27 percent more efficient than a 2001 code-compliant building
- CO2 demand-based ventilation
